Sheryl's cakes

Splashings on the web about food.
Sometimes people wonder what I do in London. Besides my full time job, I indulge in food and shoes... and hopefully some point further in my life, dance.

Apologies

This site requires minor twiggings. I'm a tech and html idiot and find it a complete feat just to accomplish what I have done, so please pardon me. If you have some tips of how I can improve, do let me know. Thanks!

All in a week's work

I'm going on a holiday to Ibiza for a week and then heading home for 2 months. I was very sure I was going to miss all the baking ingredients and equipment and books here I decided to make all the things that I wanted to try before I leave London. And so I did.

I made muffins and macaroons wed and truffles on thurs and friday, double chocolate and nut cookies on friday, macaroons on sat again. Actually, I did all these things in 4 days! I'm quite amazed by myself haha

No time for pictures and full descriptions except for a slideshow. Though I have do have to mention, the macaroons turned out okay despite being my first time. I haven't completely figured out yet coz I don't really know what is the "standard" look of THE macaroon. I've eaten Laduree so I know what's the taste but I never pry open to see the insides... so hopefully I will be able to find someone who will help me.

So pictures..

Plasir Sucre

Plsir Sucre = Sweet Pleasures

I first had it in Singapore with my bunch of girlfriends and we just kept going hmmmmmmmmmm over it. Its somewhere further up from Gallery Hotel, don't remember the name of the place though. Now I'm glad I can make it. :)

Disclaimer: Sorry guys, I don't think I'm considering making this back home this time round. Maybe the next time!!

I would definitely make it smaller the next time. While its very nice and received awesome reviews from the guests who had it, none of them could finish the entire cake after having a full dinner. :( I don't blame them because it was extremely rich and I didn't finish it myself but I do find it a waste. Afterall, I spent hours over it; nevermind, lesson learnt.

PS: I'll be changing the look of this blog sometime soon. Look out for it!

Many new creations

I've updated the Singaporean Food Album with a lot more stuff!

Lately, I'm into making desserts. These are some of the desserts I've made:

Using choux pastry and pastry cream, I first made chocolate-filled mille feuille

Then I made my rendition of a Beard Papa cream puff and used the leftover chocolate cream from mille feuille to make Eclairs. I've no pictures of cream puffs though coz I was rushing over to Debbie's and Elsie's place. I did take a picture of the eclairs. (Again, would have added the chocolate coating if I was rushing.) Debbie said that it's the best eclair that she has tasted in the UK. :) I'm happy and flattered.

Last weekend, I decided to try my hand on making some warm chocolate cake for my Declan's friends' party. It failed terribly because it wasn't fluid chocolate on the inside. (The picture actually makes it look like a macaroon!) It did look pretty and tasted awesome with the praline and cream Ben&Jerry's ice cream. Everyone loved it, so it was good. Phew!

Yesterday was Riz's birthday and in a spur of the moment, I decided to try to make the warm chocolate again. This time its a great success. We had the waiters to serve out the mini cakes with green tea icecream, it just looked extremely good. I just wished I took more pictures. :( All of us were so excited about the birthday celebration and just gorging the cake that I forgot all about picture taking. No chocolate-oozing cake here, just a cake with the birthday boy. I must say that the chocolate and green tea ice cream combination way beats the vanilla ice cream.

More posts on the new breadmaker the next time....

An exciting 2 weeks!

2 weeks ago, I made tapas for dinner - inspired after eating at a spanish restaurant

Then I made some pannacotta and mille feuille - no pictures on mille feuille because it didn't look as pretty as I wanted it to be.

And a new camera from ebay! So awesome compared to my old canon - come to think of it... its almost 7 years old!! I ordered chocolate colour but it came in pink! *___* but i'm not complaining coz its quite a nice colour as well..

And there was the brand new kitchen! (actually it's just the tiles, but it looks a hell lot better now)

I also made a cake for Elsie's birthday

Its been a fun 2 weeks!!

On a random day...

On a random day, I decided that I should make more almond cookies... My cookie cutter is broken so I had to shape it by hand. The result is super chunky sized almond cookies!

On a separate day - today, I made banana, pumpkin and hazelnut cake coz I had to finish using the butter. I still had to throw one away though... Banana, pumpkin and hazelnut cake may sound like a strange combination ~ well I couldn't find walnut so I decided to use whatever I could find at home. I thought it'd be nice to have some nuts so that there'll be some crunch to it... but turned out that I've blended them to fine to taste the crunch! Tastes not bad :) I'll prob add more banana and nuts to it though.

I also took some pictures of the dinner I made - Butter honey chicken & ham, egg and chai xin

I really can't wait to get a new camera... then I can start to take more decent pictures. This camera is just way too old and its macro function sucks big time.
